Section 5: Quick Reference Summaries

Introduction

The following are short summaries of the trails, which include distances and hiking times between selected landmarks, to help in planning hikes and for use during hikes. Readers should study the trail's detailed description in the full description before looking at the corresponding summary.

Hiking times between points of interest were recorded for one person who hikes just over 2.5 miles (4 kilometers) per hour on level ground, non-stop. The rates at which people hike are highly variable; therefore, readers should not be very concerned if their times of travel are different, especially if they stop to rest, eat, etc. It is also important to keep in mind that groups of several people travel more slowly than groups of two or three. Total hiking times and distances listed under the headings are for the main trails only; corresponding values for the side-trails are mentioned within the summaries. Please note that some trails, like the Blue and Green, require hikes of some time and distance just to reach the suggested starting point; in such cases, hikers must allow for extra time.
