Appendix G: Geographic Positioning System (GPS) Waypoints

A file of waypoints for the Yawgoog area is available. The file contains waypoints of trail and road intersections, stream crossings, trail heads, rock formations, vistas, etc. collected in the field by the author in 2003. Geocaches are not included in the file (see The Patch Trader geocache). An averaging time of at least 10 minutes, sampled at one reading per second, was used for each waypoint to minimize error. The horizontal estimated position error (EPE) is approximately 10 feet (3 meters) or less, unless otherwise stated. The elevation error is estimated to be approximately 25 feet (7.6 meters).

The file is in GPS eXchange (GPX) format. These software packages can import GPX files:

GPSBabel is free software by Robert Lipe and other contributors that converts various GPS data files, including GPX files, into formats used by different applications, including older versions of the packages mentioned above.

Note: Before downloading any software from the Internet, please make sure your computer's antivirus software is up-to-date.

It is recommended to right-click on the link and then select "Save Target As..." (Microsoft Internet Explorer). This will allow you to save the file directly to your hard drive in a directory of your choice; be sure to save the file with a .gpx extension. Clicking on the link may cause the file contents to be displayed on your browser. If this is the case, wait for the file to load completely, select "File" from the browser's menu bar, then "Save As..." in a directory of your choice with a .gpx extension.
